Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is an EHCP?

An Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) is a legal document that outlines the special educational needs of a child or young person and the support they require. It ensures that local authorities provide the necessary services and accommodations for the child's learning, health, and care needs.

When should I apply for an EHCP?

If your child’s needs are not being met by the support in place at school (e.g., SEN Support or interventions), or if their needs are significantly complex, you may need to apply for an EHCP. It is best to apply when there is clear evidence of ongoing difficulty, other interventions have already been tried and when you feel additional support is required.

How can SEND Meadow help me with an EHCP?

SEND Meadow offers personalised support throughout the EHCP process. This includes:

  • Writing formal requests for an Educational Health Care Needs Assessment (EHCNA).

  • Reviewing draft EHCPs and providing detailed feedback.

  • Assisting with appeal paperwork.

  • Drafting emails to liaise with the local authority.

  • Offering one-to-one advice on the EHCP process.

You’ll receive clear, practical advice grounded in both personal experience and professional expertise, so you feel confident and informed.

Do I need an advisor to apply for an EHCP?

While you don’t need a SEND Advisor to apply for an EHCP, many parents find it helpful to have expert advice and support, especially when navigating the legal aspects or when the local authority is not providing the right support. SEND Meadow offers specialised guidance and will ensure you understand your rights throughout the process.

What is included in the free initial consultation?

The free 15-minute consultation allows us to discuss your child's needs and how I can support you through the EHCP process. It’s an opportunity for you to ask questions and understand the services I offer. This is a no-obligation consultation to help you decide how to move forward.

Can you only help me if you are involved from the start?

No, I can help at any point throughout the process, regardless of whether I helped you to apply for the EHCP.

What happens if my child’s EHCP request is turned down?

If your local authority refuses to assess your child for an EHCP (EHCNA) or they refuse to issue an EHCP, you can appeal the decision. I offer support in writing appeal letters and preparing supporting evidence if needed for tribunal. I can also help you explore other routes for securing the necessary support for your child.

Can SEND Meadow help me with a school placement consultation?

Yes! If you're seeking an appropriate school placement for your child, I can assist with reviewing consultation bundles, drafting communication with local authorities, and helping you understand your options.

How long does the EHCP process take?

The process should take 20 weeks from the date the Local Authority agrees to assess your child. However, delays often happen, so it’s important to keep track of deadlines. If there’s a delay or the process doesn’t go as planned, I’ll help you advocate for your child.

Do you represent families at tribunal hearings?

No, I can help you to prepare for a tribunal hearing. However, I do not attend hearings.

What happens during an annual review?

An annual review is a chance to assess whether your child’s EHCP is still appropriate and whether the support is meeting their needs. I can guide you through the review process, including preparing for the meeting, providing feedback on the plan, and requesting amendments are made if necessary.

How can I book a consultation with SEND Meadow?

You can easily book a free 15-minute consultation or any other service by completing the contact form on the website or by emailing directly at contact@sendmeadow.co.uk and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

How do I know if I need help with an EHCP draft?

If you’ve received a draft EHCP and aren’t sure whether it fully meets your child’s needs, I can review it for you. I’ll provide detailed feedback on what’s working and what might need to be adjusted. This ensures that the final EHCP reflects the necessary level of support.

What should I do if I can’t afford the services?

I understand that the EHCP process can be overwhelming and costly. If cost is a concern, feel free to get in touch. I offer a range of services, from one-off consultations to comprehensive support, and we can find the right package to suit your budget. Please reach out, and we can discuss options.

Are the services provided confidential?

Yes! All interactions and information shared with SEND Meadow are treated with the highest level of confidentiality. Your child’s information will only be shared with relevant professionals and agencies, and only with your consent.
